Course description

Mass spectrometry

Alongside with nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry ranks among the most important structural analysis methods. This is a destructive but very sensitive method with very low sample consumption. The method can be used for multiple purposes such as identification of unknown compounds, quantification of known compounds, explanation of ion structure in the gas phase and determination of physical and chemical properties of ions and molecules.

Ionisation principles and techniques and mass analysers are discussed in detail. Various techniques of ion detection and different approaches to identification and determination of compounds are also considered.

The same as within other courses, great emphasis is placed on practical application, primarily for biologically active molecules, irrespective of the molecular weight of compounds.

The lecturer is Lukáš Plaček who deals with theoretical and above all practical aspects of mass spectrometry on a long-term, professional basis.
