Course description

Physical analytical methods

Particle size and shape are important parameters of each substance, because they are bearers of its other physico-chemical properties. They influence drug transport in the body or production of pharmaceuticals. Particle size and shape affect filterability, mixing and separation, distribution of components in a tablet and, last but not least, pharmaceutical formulation, for example, tablet production.

The aim of the course "Physical analytical methods" is to answer the following questions: what parametered are influenced by particle size and shape and, vice versa, what parameters influence particle size and shape. Participants are acquainted with basic methods of evaluation of the mentioned characteristics. An overview of applications of the most frequently used methods is provided. From among methods of particle size evaluation, grain-size analysis, sedimentation methods and laser diffraction are discussed in more detail; from among techniques of particle shape characterisation, great attention is paid to image analysis and optical and electron microscopy.

A part of the course is devoted to material rheology and viscosity, methods of sorption properties evaluation (inverse gas chromatography and porosimetry) and zeta potential.

The guarantor of the course is Veronika Grünwaldová who deals with methods of particle size and shape evaluation on a long-term basis. Another lecturer is Michal Klimovič.
