Assoc. Prof. Luboš Opletal, Ph.D.

In 1976 Luboš Opletal graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Charles University in Hradec Kralove, where in 1979 he received his RNDr. (Rerum Naturalium Doctor) degree in Medicinal Chemistry and in 1985 he became a Candidate of Science (analogue of Ph.D.) in Medicinal Chemistry. From the same year he has been working as a researcher at the Department of Pharmaceutical Botany and Ecology of the above-mentioned faculty. In 1995 he defended his thesis in Pharmaceutical Botany and became an Associate Professor, and in 1997 he became the head of the work group "Ecology and Production of Medicinal Plants".At the Faculty of Pharmacy he is a guarantor of the courses "Food Supplements – Nutraceutics", "Bases of Traditional Chinese Phytopharmacotherapy" and "Learning Medicinal Plants". He is involved in teaching of Pharmaceutical Botany, Phytotherapy, Applied Dietetics, Pharmacognosy and Toxicology of Natural Drugs and Clinical and Forensic Analysis of Toxic Compounds.

In his scientific activities Mr. Opletal specializes in isolation methods of plant metabolites and compounds contained in higher plants and fungi with focus on their utilization in therapy, food industry and animal production, in technologies of API obtaining and introduction of promising medicinal plants from non-European regions.

In 1988 he became the Secretary of the work conference "Cadiso-Nutrimenta" (Cardiovascular Diseases and Organism Stability – Food Additives and Their Relation to Prevention of Cardiovascular System Diseases) covering utilization of promising plants and isolated compounds of specialized metabolism at prevention and treatment of the circulatory system diseases. Since 2002 he has been a member of the Scientific Committee for Animal Nutrition of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic working in the Institute of Animal Science in Prague-Uhříněves where he prepares studies about natural compounds, their favourable biological effects, toxicity and interaction in livestock production in the Czech Republic for practical needs of the Ministry of Agriculture. Since 2004 he has been the head of the Information and Educational Centre for Nutraceutics (IECN) that provides information about food supplements and their interaction with drugs to mostly pharmacies and health food stores. Since 2005 he has been the leader of the Adinaco Research Group investigating the influence of natural compounds on the progress of human neurodegenerative diseases.He is also a member of the Czech Pharmaceutical Society of the Czech Medical Association of J.E.Purkyně, the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan, the Czech Chemical Society, the Pharmacopoeia Commission of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic (Pharmacognosy and Drug Nomenclature Section) and a member of the editorial boards of the journals "Research in Pig Breeding" and "Chemické listy" (Chemical Papers).

He is an author or co-author of a number of scientific publications, multiple conference contributions, several university textbooks and chapters in monographs.
