Assoc. Prof. Vladimír Setnička, Ph.D.

Assoc. Prof. Setnička studies the structure and conformation changes of pharmaceutically and biologically significant chiral drugs (pharmaceutical precursors, peptides, proteins, carbohydrates, supramolecular self-assemblies, etc.) by methods of chiroptical spectroscopy: electronic circular dichroism (ECD), vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and newly Raman optical activity (ROA). Since 2003 he works at the Department of Analytical Chemistry of the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague where he defended his doctoral thesis (2003) and Associate Professor thesis in Analytical Chemistry (2010). He also gained extensive experience during his one-year postdoctoral fellowship (2002-2003) in the scientific group of Prof. T. A. Keiderling (University of Illinois at Chicago, USA) and during two-month research fellowship (2003) in the laboratory of Prof. J.-M. Lehn, Nobel prize winner in Chemistry in 1987 (Louis Pasteur University, Strasbourg, France). For his scientific activities in spectral analysis of chiral compounds Mr. Setnička received several awards, for example, Chemistry Award 2002 (Rhodia ČR/Embassy of France in the Czech Republic) and the Young Authors' Best Paper in Spectroscopy Award of the Spectroscopic Society of Jan Marcus Marci (2005). He is a co-author of more then 40 full-text contributions to mostly international scientific journals and proceedings, one chapter in the book and more than 60 contributions at international scientific conferences and workshops. His educational activities focus not only on teaching of students of Bachelor and Master programmes at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague, but he is also a lecturer of courses for expert public: since 2005 at courses Measurement of Vibrational Spectra and Interpretation of Vibrational Spectra (Spectroscopic Society of Jan Marcus Marci) and since 2007 at the course Introduction to Vibrational Spectroscopy (educational course CTU 19 of ATHENS programme).
